Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

The Class BBQ was a great opportunity to get to know my classmates better. I think I grew very close to my classmates during this term and I think this was a big reason why.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

The fact that the program is very conversational was really good for learning it quickly. I also appreciate that there are options to experience Japanese culture outside of classes. I do think that it would help if there was more material offered to help with self-study, such as extra credit or optional framer sheets.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

Pair work was the most helpful I think, the ability to practice conversation with another learner and mutually help each other, as well as growing more comfortable speaking to my classmates was a very positive part of the program.

Any suggestions for improving class activities or materials?

I think some optional extra study material would help a lot. If the teachers offered a framework for self-study it would help students feel less lost for what to do if they felt like they needed more practice even after they finished the homework

What did you find most valuable in the Culture Course?

The explanations of Japanese culture was a very good supplement to the schoolwork. A lot of tourists visit Japan or any foreign country and don’t really experience the culture of that country. Having a professor versed in Japanese culture cultivated a greater appreciation for my time in Japan.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

During the adjustment period and the first month living in Japan, it’s a good idea to avoid problems by just assuming fault whenever there’s some kind of incident. I think I adjusted much more quickly by assuming fault an apologizing for bumping into people or spilling things and such, even in cases where it was very clear that it wasn’t my fault. I also suggest trying to make friends as soon as possible to mitigate culture shock, especially with students who don’t share a native language with you. You will both make mistakes in speaking and you can bond over that.

Testimonials

If you’re considering KCP, just sign up. If you have to, save up for it. It was worth it. I continue to learn the language, I continue to make new friends, I continue to find new, unfamiliar and exciting places and all of this was possible because I made the decision to learn at KCP. I have met some really great people (friends as well as teachers) who have helped me grow as a person. I’m thankful for this time I’ve spent here. It really has gone by too fast but I will forever remember the memories I’ve made here.
